What is mobile number porting?
Mobile number porting is switching to
another mobile network but still retaining
your mobile number. All mobile phone users
have the right to switch their mobile network
whenever they want.
How does it work?
Porting your mobile number to Telkom is easy and free of charge and here’s what you need to do;
Prepaid
- Buy a Telkom SIM card and register it with RICA
- Use the number you want to port and SMS ‘PORTME#’,
your ID number# and the 20-digit ICCIC number,
(found at the back the new SIM card and
starts with ‘89...’) to 081 160 7678 - Your number will take between 24 to 48 hours to port
Contract
- For contract mobile numbers, visit your nearest
Telkom store and fill in an application form.

Keep your number safe and report any suspicious activity:
Here are some precautions provided by the South African Banking Risk Information Centre how you can prevent falling victim to these kinds of scams:
- Enable WhatsApp two-step verification
- Check for signal loss on your cell phone, as this could indicate that you have been the victim of a SIM swap/ or mobile number porting
- Should you lose signal permanently, contact us immediately
- Activate international cell phone roaming when travelling
- Always inform your bank when travelling abroad
- Don’t click on unsolicited links
- Install the latest security updates on all your devices
- Do not respond to competition SMSs or MMSs
- If you receive a phone call requesting personal or confidential information do not respond, and end the call
